What To Do After an Auto Accident

By February 3, 2020September 22nd, 2023Insurance

No one wants to be involved in an auto accident, and thinking about the what if’s when driving can be overwhelming. Knowing what to do following an accident is an important part of being an informed and experienced driver. Since the majority of accidents only lead to property damage, we are going to look at the things to do following an accident where you are not severely injured.

Stay Put

After an accident, no matter how minor or severe the damage is, it is imperative to stay put and not flee the scene. You may think a minor fender bender is no big deal, but you must stay put until insurance information is exchanged and the police arrive. You never want to be accused of a hit and run, so stay put.

Contact the Police

Calling the police is always a wise decision when you’re in an accident. Even if no one is injured and the damage appears minor, having an official report of the event is wise. Your insurance policy may require a police report to pay out for the damages, so getting one is a good way to cover your back. When the police are called, it is important to keep the scene of the accident exactly how it was when the accident occurred so their report is as precise as possible.

Photograph What You Can

In addition to preserving the scene by not moving your car, it is always a good idea to take photographs of the scene if you are able. Likewise, if you have any injuries it’s smart to document them as well with a photograph. These images can later be used to ensure you recover the damages you are due.

Trade Insurance Information

Once you and the other driver have spoken with the police, exchange insurance information so that you can make a claim with your insurer. If you do not have police present at the scene this is especially important. When the police make a report they will also obtain this information, but if no police are present you will have to make sure to have this information. In addition to getting insurance information from the other party, it is also a good idea to get contact information from any witnesses who may have seen the accident.

Contact Your Insurance Provider

Finally, you’ll want to contact your insurance agent and make a claim as soon as possible. Your coverage may be dependent on reporting the accident within a certain amount of time. Contacting your insurance company quickly also allows you to give as detailed an account as possible, while the accident is still at the forefront of your mind.
