Throwing a party for family and friends is always fun and stressful all at the same time. Along with the cleaning and meal prep here are some things to consider to make your home safe for visitors of all ages.
Food & Allergies
Ask guests on the invite to mention when RSVP’ing if they have any food allergies. If they have known allergies it’s assumed they will have an EpiPen with them. An EpiPen will also come in handy if someone gets stung by a bee. Be sure to keep a close eye on them if they haven’t been stung prior and call 911 if they are having difficulty breathing.
Grill
Grilled food is always the go to for a summer cookout. Take precautions when using a grill around a larger than usual about of people at your home. Be sure the grill is off to the side of a walk thru area as much as possible. When the grill is turned off make sure it’s blocked off as its cooling. If using a charcoal grill be sure to pour some water on the hot coals to get the temperature down from the sweltering 1,000 degrees. Also be sure to keep a spray bottle or fire extinguisher close by.
Bad Weather
When hosting a cookout and bad weather occurs make sure there is enough space for everyone indoors. Canopy and pavilions work great if there’s just rain, but if you hear thunder it’s time to retreat indoors because it’s still possible to be electrocuted in open air coverage.
Valuables & Breakables
Everyone would like to assume they can have their close friends and family over for a party and nothing in the house would be disrupted. Unfortunately, sometimes that’s not the case. Put away any items that you wouldn’t want broken or go missing.
Parking
Mention to guests on the invite where to park if it’s not obvious. Sometimes there’s new grass or a spot saved for the children to play although it is strongly suggested to keep children away from anywhere car could be traveling.
Pools
Have a “lifeguard” on duty if you’re allowing your guests to cool off in the deep end. It’s also completely acceptable to ask someone to get their child out of the pool if they aren’t keeping a close eye.
Decks & Balconies
If they aren’t in an immediate area where people will be hanging out be sure to lock the entrance. If people will be having out on your deck, just make sure there’s nothing to heavy that could be knocked off and possibly land on someone below. Keep objects that children could stand on clear from the edge. Ensure the railings are in good condition to support the crowd.
