While that doesn’t necessarily mean your car is at risk, there is one key factor you should be aware of. Or maybe we should say keyless. Now, more than half of all new vehicles sold come with keyless entry, which could be contributing to this growing problem. To lower your risk, just follow some basic rules of thumb.
Never Leave Your Keys in Your Car
Although this rule hasn’t changed over time, additional security features have made drivers more complacent. So, they’re leaving their key fobs in the glove compartment or on the dashboard as they run into a restaurant or a store. They think it’ll be a quick errand, but many get a nasty surprise when they come back outside to find their car missing. Just take the extra time to park your car, grab your keys, and go in. Keep Track of Your Keys
This goes hand-in-hand with our previous point. Opportunistic thieves aren’t just looking inside vehicles anymore. They’re also looking on sidewalks, in restaurants, and other public places. If you accidentally leave your keys behind, it’s easier than ever for them to use the electronic options to locate your car. From there, it’s a simple matter of push-to-start and they’re off! While we all have our off days, it’s especially important that you know where your keys are at all times.
Consider Additional Security Measures
If you’re seriously worried about auto theft in your area, then you may want to increase your car’s security. This means different things for different people. You can always use more technology, like Onstar or other subscription services, that can help you monitor your car and even stop it remotely. If you prefer, you can also go old school. By using window tinting to limit visibility and hardware like a steering wheel locks, you’ll deter those spur-of-the-moment thieves. Plus, you’ll have the additional peace of mind that comes with a secure vehicle.
Like so many other recent upgrades, keyless entry was designed to make our lives easier! But with great technology comes great responsibility. Try to enjoy this feature without becoming careless in the process and you should be just fine.
