How to Protect Your Property from Vandalism

By March 13, 2019September 22nd, 2023Business

Although property crime statistics have been steadily declining since 1990, millions of cases of vandalism are reported each year.  While both personal and business properties are at risk, commercial buildings seem to suffer more from this act.  In an effort to help you protect your property, we’ll share some tips designed to cover you both physically and financially.

Beat the Clock

One of the main reasons commercial properties are targeted for vandalism more frequently is timing. Many office and retail spaces have set hours that potential criminals can easily work around.  Plus, vandalism tends to occur during the late evening hours when these buildings are typically empty!  So, how can you protect yourself without altering your schedule?

If you don’t have them already, basic security measures can deter the more opportunistic vandals. Features like motion-sensor floodlights and surveillance cameras are more effective than you might think.  You can also look into having a fence or thick shrubbery installed around the perimeter.  If they can’t get in, after all, they can’t go through with the vandalism. Plus, generally creating a clean and tidy area is important.  Dark and trash-riddled properties naturally attract the wrong crowds.

Keep in Contact

One of the most effective forms of protection against vandalism is communication!  If you or other businesses in your area suspect property crime, then you must report it right away.  After providing information to the local authorities, the police might institute special patrols and/or hotlines in an effort to prevent a recurrence. But you don’t have to leave everything to them.

Do you have a business watch group in your area?  Very similar to the concept of neighborhood watch groups, this type of organize encourages business owners to band together.  Keeping an eye out for one another’s properties allows you to be there, even when you can’t be there.  Plus, you’ll all be able to act faster if there is suspicious activity close by!

Check Your Coverage

Unfortunately, all of these measures might not be enough to completely avoid vandalism.  Try to prepare for the worst with the right business insurance.  A comprehensive commercial plan will usually include protection for this type of property crime.  Although theft often isn’t covered, you should qualify for help removing the defacement and making any necessary repairs.  Even if you plan doesn’t specifically include the term “vandalism,” you should find something in the wording about “willful and malicious damage to property.” Or “destruction.”

Having a good insurance agent on your side is just another form of protection.  Not only can he/she help you put the proper policies in place, but also this could save you a lot of time (and worry) later on.  Don’t spend your time poring over insurance contracts. Just contact your agent anytime you have a question or need to file a claim!  Not sure your current agent can help?  Then contact Freedom Insurance Agency!  We’re here to assist you and your business in any way possible.  That includes working together to protect your property from vandalism.
