How Much Insurance Coverage Do I Need?

By September 29, 2020December 12th, 2022Insurance

There are insurance policies for nearly everything in life and it can be tricky to determine how much coverage is enough and how much is excessive. Luckily, Freedom Insurance works for our clients, not for insurance companies, meaning our goal is to help our clients find the perfect policy for their own needs. The following recommendations serve as baseline guidance that anyone can benefit from when selecting their insurance policies. For specific recommendations tailored to your specific needs, feel free to submit a quote today.

Auto Insurance

Each state has its own minimum auto insurance requirements. The state of Maryland requires the following to be covered at minimum:

  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: $30,000 per person/ $60,000 per accident
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage: $15,000
  • Uninsured motorist property damage coverage: $15,000. Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage: $30,000 per person/ $60,000 per accident
  • Personal Injury Protection: $2,500

While these are the minimums that all drivers must have, it may make sense to also look into “full coverage” policies that include comprehensive and collision coverage. This way, you’re covered even if you are not driving or not at fault.

Home Insurance

If you are purchasing your home with a mortgage, chances are that you already have a home insurance policy, but that doesn’t mean it will meet all of your needs. When evaluating your home insurance plan or considering a new policy, be sure to ask your agent about add-ons like flooding and hurricane damage coverage. If you want your possessions to be covered as well, this may need to be added to your policy.

Life Insurance

Life insurance policies can eliminate the chances of your loved ones living through financial burden in the event that you pass away unexpectedly. When choosing your policy, try to select one that offers an immediate payout. You want to make sure your loved ones receive the payout right away, not 2-4 years down the line. If you have any preexisting conditions, make sure that your insurance company is viewing them impartially to avoid being overcharged.

For those who have no preexisting conditions, when enacting their life insurance policy, a conversion feature could be a fantastic perk. This way, if a condition develops over the span of your policy, you can convert it to a lifetime policy without any further medical evaluation.
