Cold Weather Will Impact Your Electric Vehicle Range
There are many factors that affect Electric Vehicle (EV) mileage, like speed, driving style, and ambient temperature. All will reduce the range of a full charge. There are two major challenges presented by colder temperatures – cold air limits battery performance, and running the heater is a huge drain on the battery. Those with gasoline powered vehicles may be familiar with the reduction in fuel economy running the heater brings. The same is true of the driving range reduction for EV when the heater is used consistently.

In a recent analysis conducted by the AAA, EVs were tested in cold, moderate and hot temperatures. The average EV battery range turned in by three vehicles tested was 105 miles at 75 degrees, but that fell dramatically to 43 miles at 20 degrees. With limited charging options, this is the kind of detailed information EV drivers need to plan their daily driving this winter. AAA advises EV owners to monitor the gauge on every trip and know the locations of charging stations along your route.
Here are some other tips that will help maximize your Electric Vehicle’s cold weather mileage.
- Store your vehicle in the garage. The few degrees difference from the outside temperature can make a difference.
- Preheat the car while it’s still plugged in to reduce battery drain
- Use your electric seat warmers. They take less energy than heating the cabin air.
- Keep tires properly inflated. Pressure falls with lower temperatures and increases road friction which negatively impacts mileage.
- Monitor recharging time. Using electricity from the grid to keep the battery warm will increase charging time.
