Do You Have Enough Auto Insurance Coverage?

By January 26, 2021December 12th, 2022Insurance

A simple Google search of “car insurance policies” will lead you to countless different insurance companies offering a host of unique auto insurance policies. When selecting a new auto insurance policy or auditing your own as we start the new year, how can you make sure you have adequate coverage?

Meeting the Minimum

Each state has its own minimum requirements for auto insurance. While you may want to consider additional coverage, the state of Maryland requires all of its drivers to meet these coverage thresholds:

Liability Coverage

  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: $30,000 per person/ $60,000 per accident
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage: $15,000

Liability insurance covers both bodily injury liability and property damage liability. In other words, if you are at fault in an accident, this coverage will pay for expenses that arise from injury or property damage that you caused.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

  • Uninsured motorist property damage coverage: $15,000.
  • Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage: $30,000 per person/ $60,000 per accident

Even though car insurance is a requirement, there is always the risk that you will be involved in an accident with someone uninsured or underinsured. This coverage will pay for any damages or injuries that arise as a result. As is the case with liability coverage, underinsured motorist coverage is also categorized individually by property damage and bodily damage.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

  • Personal Injury Protection: $2,500

Regardless of who is at fault, you shouldn’t have to be stuck paying for medical bills after a car accident. The state of Maryland enforces this $2,500 coverage minimum to prevent its citizens from being stuck doing so.

Added Protection

While these are the minimums that all drivers must meet, it also makes sense to look into full coverage policies that include comprehensive and collision coverage. This way, you’re covered regardless of who was at fault, or even if you weren’t driving at the time of an incident.
