Protect Your Heart!

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. To prevent heart disease and increase awareness of its effects, Freedom Insurance Agency, Inc wants you to know February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the number one cause of death here in Maryland, accounting for almost 11,000 deaths annually. Our state has the 17th highest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the nation, with coronary heart disease and stroke most prevalent among Maryland adults aged 55.

Fortunately, heart disease is both preventable and manageable. Making a few lifestyle changes can greatly improve your health and keep your cardiovascular system strong. Carroll County Hospital Center is celebrating National Heart Month with a series of events to show you how, including:

Zumba® Heart Party — Monday, February 29th.. Y in Central Maryland Hill Family Center

There are healthy changes you can make to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. Here are some things you can do to lower your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

  • Watch your weight.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get active and eat healthy.
