5 Ways Your Business Can Give Back to the Community

By August 21, 2019September 22nd, 2023Business

Whether you own a small or big business, it’s important to give back to the community whose support helped you succeed.  By partnering with other organizations in your area, you can invest in the local economy and provide assistance to those in need.  Not to mention, it’s a great way to stay connected with your neighbors. Even as you receive positive publicity and the peace of mind that comes from helping others.  If you’re not sure how to get involved, here are 5 easy ways to give back:

1. Sponsor Youth Sports

What’s your favorite sport? Chances are, there’s a youth team in your community who plays it, looking for sponsors.  Imagine seeing your business’ name printed across their jerseys or along the perimeter of their stadium.  Although the price will vary depending on location, most sponsorships are affordable advertising for small businesses.  You’ll also have the benefit of seeing your sponsorship in action. Deliver those uniforms yourself, check out a few games, and enjoy being a part of the community—even as you give back.

2. Partner with a Local Charity

Is there a cause that holds special meaning for you?  Show your support by partnering with a local charity who shares your passion.  You can help to sell tickets for their fundraising events.  Or display donation boxes for them at your various locations.  Some small businesses even offer to donate a portion of their daily sales to a specific nonprofit organization.  Whether that’s for a day, a week, or a month!  Try to plan these events well in advance, so people in your community have plenty of time to spread the word and maximize your efforts.

3. Donate Goods or Services

If funds are an issue, you can find other ways to give back.  Why not donate extra materials?  Or the services your business offers, when relevant?  While it won’t be appropriate in every situation, it’s perfectly logical to donate free accounting to a local nonprofit organization.  As a landscaper, you might be able to help clean up a community park or nursing home in your area.  Don’t forget to ask your employees for input.  They might be willing to volunteer alongside you and give back to a cause they consider worthy!

4. Offer the Use of Your Space/Equipment

Many charitable societies and other community groups are in need of meeting space.  If you have a conference room or office that you can spare after hours, why not donate it to them?  This method of giving back won’t cost you more than a few hours of your time and you can choose how often you’d like to offer it to them.  Maybe they have a weekly or monthly rotation you can participate in, as your schedule permits.

Don’t forget about your business equipment, too.  Even if that only includes a truck, you could still offer to transport donations over the weekend for a good cause.  These free deliveries might be a small act on your part, but they can make a big difference in your community.  Especially when all of the local businesses come together to give back.

5. Give throughout the Year

During the holiday season, it’s natural to reach out to charities and nonprofit organizations. But your community needs you year-round! While conducting toy and food drives before the holidays can be a great way to give back, don’t lose momentum in the new year.  Look for opportunities to help out during winter, spring, and summer too!
