4 Ways to Avoid Parking Lot Accidents

By February 19, 2021September 14th, 2023Insurance, Personal Insurance

What’s the first thing that comes into mind when you picture a car accident? A high-speed collision where airbags deploy and multiple cars receive heavy damage? Luckily, not all crashes are like this. In fact, more than 50,000 crashes occur in parking lots per year. Still, even slow fender benders can lead to insurance claims and even policy price increases.  Follow these four tips to steer clear of any parking lot accidents!

Look Behind When Reversing

Rearview mirrors are great for navigating through busy highways, and backup cameras are great for super tight parking jobs, but we shouldn’t solely rely on these features when reversing out of our parking spots. When you look over your right shoulder, you get a much clearer idea of where your vehicle is currently headed and whether any cars or pedestrians are approaching.

Park Strategically

Strategic parking can significantly reduce your chances of being involved in a parking lot accident. Be sure to choose an opening that is reasonably easy to exit and free from any blind spots to make life easier when it’s time to leave. If possible, you can even choose spots that allow you to pull forward when exiting rather than reversing out of the spot. Parking in more secluded areas of the lot also makes sense since you’ll reduce your chances of getting door dings, and the extra walking may end up being refreshing! (You may want to wait on this one until spring!)

Drive Slowly

Remember, you’re in a parking lot – not a speedway. Be sure to travel at a reasonable pace and be aware of your surroundings at all times. You never know when an inexperienced driver, pedestrian or child may spring out of nowhere, so keeping these things in mind when pulling out or driving through the parking lot will help your reaction time when they happen.

Don’t Be a Distracted Driver

Driving while listening to your favorite music can be very satisfying, but always make sure your GPS and playlist are queued up before starting your drive!  While talking with your passengers is reasonable, any activity that takes your attention away from the road should be avoided.
